Quick answer

The Blue Lagoon is busy in summer, and no boat trip can make it empty. A Malta travel site calls July and August by far the busiest months and suggests May or June. The Malta Tourism Authority caps how many people can be at the lagoon at once. You can make the day calmer by choosing a shoulder month, an evening sailing, or a stop at the Crystal Lagoon.

How busy it gets

Wikipedia says large numbers of tourists and tour boats visit the Blue Lagoon daily. It also records that over-use of the lagoon became a matter of contention in the late 2010s. A Malta travel site calls July and August by far the busiest months of the summer season. The Malta Tourism Authority introduced the booking system to limit numbers at the lagoon, and one recent reviewer of the catamaran trip still called it overcrowded. Expect company in summer.

Choose the month

The same travel site suggests May or June as the best months to visit and says September and October can also work, though the weather is less predictable. It describes winter, from November to March, as much quieter but with a sea too cold for swimming. This trip’s Crystal Lagoon swimming stop runs only from June to October, so the shoulder months of June and September sit inside both the swimming season and the less crowded part of it.

Choose the sailing

The travel site recommends a sunset boat trip for a quieter visit with an early-evening swim. The catamaran trip has an evening option, a shorter outing of about four hours. Nothing guarantees that it is quieter, and the sea decides what you actually get. If calm is the priority, compare the evening sailing against the day sailing on the calendar, and do not assume an evening boat means an empty lagoon.

How the booking cap helps

The authority says its system caps the number of visitors at the Blue Lagoon at any one time and divides the day into time slots. The cap applies to people who land, since the pass is for stepping ashore. It does not change how many boats anchor in the lagoon, so the water can still be busy while the beach is limited. A reviewer who sailed this trip said the lagoon was overcrowded even so, which is a reminder that a cap is not the same as empty.

Quieter water nearby

The travel site lists the Crystal Lagoon, Santa Marija Bay and San Niklaw Bay as quieter places to swim than the Blue Lagoon. On the catamaran day the Crystal Lagoon is a swimming stop from June to October, weather permitting, so that is the quieter swim built into the trip. Santa Marija Bay is a landing point where, according to the authority, no booking is needed, but it is not a named stop on this trip.

Make the most of a busy stop

Swim from the boat instead of the shore if the beach looks packed. The vessel has swimming ladders and a waterslide, and sunbeds are first come, first served, so board with your group and choose your spot early. Bring your own snorkel if you want to look at the water without queueing for hired gear. If the Blue Lagoon is too crowded for you, the Crystal Lagoon stop and the caves still follow, and the day is longer than the lagoon alone.

Who this isn’t for

If you want a beach to yourself, a boat day to the Blue Lagoon is the wrong tool. In that case a private trip or a walk to a quiet bay is a better fit. This guide is independent of the operator and the authority, and the best way to judge crowding is to read the most recent reviews on the booking page.
